Hawaiian Canoe Club- Partner of the month

Topics:
Each month, Skyline Eco Adventures highlights an organization on Maui that is creating positive change on the islands. This month, we are featuring Hawaiian Canoe Club’s Kamali’i Program. This program by Hawaiian Canoe Club gives back to Maui’s youth.

The Hawaiian Canoe Club was founded by John M. Lake in 1960 in coordination with 25 other members of Hawaiian ancestry. This coordination has paved the way for Hawaiian Canoe Club to grow and support other clubs around Maui. hawaiian canoe club logo Since 1967, Hawaiian Canoe Club has added over a dozen canoe clubs to its fleet. These clubs are mostly named after Maui ali’i (royalty) or distinguished members of Hawaiian Canoe Club. With such a rapidly growing club, leaders formalized their commitment to the keiki (children) with the formation of the autonomous Hawaiian Kamali‘i, Inc. The organization now serves hundreds of keiki every summer through the Hawaiian Kamali‘i Summer Enrichment Program. During this annual summer program, keiki learn Hawaiian culture, oli, mele, hula, protocol, traditional food preparation, religion, and navigation. They also receive training in character building, leadership, and ocean safety. The Hawaiian Canoe Club has a variety of programs for keiki to get involved and become leaders in the community. Though each program fulfills a different job, each job plays a part in the mission and vision to make one strong organization.
