Have you Tried the Sport of Kings?

Topics: , ,
Surfing is one of the world’s oldest sports. In Hawaii, it is known as the sport of kings. The history of surfing is closely intertwined with Hawaiian cultural traditions. Surfing began around the year 900 B.C., when Ancient Polynesians began riding “olo” boards which are similar to surfboards as a form of religious art. Since then, surfing has evolved into a  global sport and, for some, a way of life. Many public figures including Mark Twain and Thomas Edison have tried surfing in Hawaii.   Duke Kahanamoku is responsible for popularizing the ancient Hawaiian sport. The Olympic swimmer known as “The Duke” was born in Honolulu in 1890 and grew up surfing on Waikiki Beach. He used his popularity to make surfing a major part of pop culture in the United States and around the world. Although The Duke never achieved his goal of surfing in the Olympics, the sport will finally be be added as an Olympic event in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games. However, the winter, known as big wave season, is when conditions are truly at their best. During big wave season, you will likely see professional surfers in action in Honolua Bay and Hookipa Beach. Maui’s most famous spot to surf is Peahi, which has earned the nickname Jaws because of its gigantic and fierce waves. If you are just learning to surf, catch a wave off of a West Maui or South Maui beach. Some of the best places here for beginners are Kaanapali, Lahaina, and Kihei.
